China’s CXMT Reportedly Rejects Apple’s Price-Cut Demands as Domestic Memory Makers Gain Leverage

October 26, 2026 — ChangXin Memory Technologies (CXMT), one of China’s leading dynamic random-access memory (DRAM) manufacturers, has reportedly rejected Apple’s demands for lower memory-chip prices, drawing attention to changing dynamics in the global semiconductor supply chain.

According to media reports citing industry sources, Apple had held discussions with CXMT over the supply and pricing of mobile DRAM products, including LPDDR5X memory. Apple was reportedly seeking more competitive pricing to help control component costs for future iPhones and other devices. CXMT, however, was said to have declined to offer the requested discounts.

The details of the negotiations have not been publicly confirmed by either company. The reports should therefore not be interpreted as evidence that Apple and CXMT have formally ended all discussions or ruled out a future commercial relationship.

CXMT is a major Chinese producer of DRAM, a type of semiconductor memory widely used in smartphones, personal computers and computing equipment. Rising demand from Chinese electronics manufacturers and artificial intelligence infrastructure has created new opportunities for domestic memory suppliers. Companies such as Huawei and Xiaomi represent important sources of demand for locally produced memory chips.

At the same time, the global memory market is being reshaped by the rapid expansion of artificial intelligence infrastructure. Data centers require growing quantities of high-bandwidth memory, or HBM, as well as server DRAM. As manufacturers direct more resources toward higher-value products, supply conditions and pricing across other memory categories can also change.

In a tighter market, suppliers with strong customer demand and substantial existing orders may have less incentive to offer deep discounts to new buyers. The reported negotiations illustrate how this dynamic could weaken the traditional purchasing advantage enjoyed by major technology companies.

For Apple, rising memory costs could put pressure on product margins. The company has historically benefited from its large purchasing volumes and long-term supplier relationships, which give it considerable bargaining power. However, purchasing scale alone may not secure favorable pricing if alternative suppliers have limited capacity or have already committed production to other customers.

Qualifying a new memory supplier also involves more than negotiating a price. Components must meet requirements for performance, reliability, manufacturing consistency, long-term availability and compatibility with specific devices. Any prospective supplier must demonstrate that it can deliver the required chips at scale and maintain consistent quality throughout a product cycle.

Nevertheless, CXMT’s reported stance does not mean that it has replaced established global suppliers such as Samsung Electronics, SK hynix and Micron. Differences remain in manufacturing technology, product portfolios, production scale and customer qualification. CXMT’s ability to expand its international market share will depend on further technological progress, reliable mass production and the wider trade and regulatory environment.

The broader significance of the reported episode lies in the changing commercial position of China’s domestic memory industry. Rather than competing solely through lower prices, local manufacturers may increasingly focus on capacity utilization, customer commitments and sustainable margins. Continued domestic demand, combined with improvements in chip performance and reliability, could strengthen their bargaining position.

Whether Apple and CXMT eventually reach a supply agreement remains uncertain. The more important question for the semiconductor industry is whether Chinese memory manufacturers can continue improving their technology, expanding usable production capacity and establishing a more competitive position in the global supply chain.
